Dream interpretation

Dreaming of water usually mirrors your state of mind: calm, clear water means you are settled, while muddy, rough water means something inside you is still unsorted. Water is one of the deepest symbols in dreams, because feelings behave like water. Sometimes they stay still, sometimes they spill over, and sometimes they get stirred up and turn cloudy. So look at the whole picture: what the water looked like, where it was and what you were doing in it. The place changes the meaning too. A flowing river means being carried along by the current of life, and an ocean stretching to the horizon speaks of how vast your emotions feel, or of standing before the unknown.

  • Clear water

Water so clear you can see the bottom means you are honest with yourself and know clearly what you want. If you are torn over a decision, the answer has already formed inside you.

  • Muddy water

Just as you cannot see the bottom through muddy water, there is something inside you that you have not yet noticed, perhaps anger you have held down or a doubt about a relationship. Once you find the real cause of your unease, your mind settles slowly, the way muddy water clears.

  • Still water in a pond

The still water of a calm pond shows depth of thought. Your mind wants to pause for a while and look at itself. But stagnant water covered in algae means a quiet grievance has sat with you for a long time, and now is the time to say it out loud.

  • Drinking water

Drinking water in a dream means quenching an inner thirst, whether for rest or for a little attention from someone. If cold, clean water satisfies you, that need is being met now. If you keep drinking and stay thirsty, or the water is dirty, what you are using to fill the gap is not the right thing.

  • Bathing in water

Water washes away dirt, so a dream of bathing, like getting soaked in the rain, points to a lighter mind and a fresh start. If you feel refreshed after the bath, you really are leaving an old trouble behind. If the dirt will not come off however hard you scrub, some guilt is still holding on to you.

  • Floating on water

Floating calmly means you have made peace with your own feelings and do not feel the need to control everything by force. But if the current is carrying you off and you cannot stop, you have handed yourself over to circumstances a little too much.

  • Swimming in water

Swimming forward with ease shows you are handling an emotional situation well. If you have to swim hard against the current, managing your feelings is costing you a lot of energy, and perhaps you are fighting something that force cannot change.

  • Falling into water and starting to drown

The fear of suddenly falling in and sinking means your emotions or the pressure of work feel like they are slipping out of your control. This is not a prediction of an accident. It is a tired mind's signal that it is time to get help from someone or to put down some responsibilities.

  • Floodwater

Water spreading everywhere around you, or rising fast, means pressure and strong feelings are arriving all at once, before you are ready for them.

  • Water coming into your house

Your home is your private space and stands for your family, so when water gets in, whether from a flood or from rain, some outside trouble is now disturbing the peace of your family. If water drips through the ceiling drop by drop, you are avoiding a small problem that is quietly growing.

When you wake up, notice whether the water frightened you or brought you relief, because the same scene means something quite different depending on that. Feeling afraid as you walked into deep water speaks of pressure, while walking in without fear shows you are ready to face your own feelings. A water dream is a mirror, then, and in it the weather of your mind shows clearly.
