Dreaming of a house is really a dream about you, because the dream house usually pictures your state of mind and your family life. In Bengali the word for house, bari, means more than a building. It also means family and roots, as in the village home a family comes from, or the parents' home a married woman still calls her own. So the dream house shows how you have built your life and how safe you feel inside it. Each room says something different too: the bedroom speaks of intimacy and rest, the attic of thoughts you have put away for now, and the basement of memories you have hidden even from yourself. Remember whether the house was your own or unfamiliar, and whether you felt at ease inside or as if you could not breathe, and the meaning becomes much clearer.
A new house
A new or unfamiliar house pictures a new chapter of life, like setting up a home after marriage or taking a job in another city. If you are moving and the packing never seems to end, part of you is not yet willing to let go of something from your old life.
Building a house
Laying bricks or digging foundations means you are busy building your future, such as putting savings aside or setting up a household. If the work is left half done, ask which plan you have not yet made up your mind about.
Your childhood home
A childhood home, or the mud house in the village where you grew up, usually returns in dreams when something in the present stirs up old feelings, like shrinking at a scolding at work just as you did as a child. Under heavy stress the mind also goes back to the days when someone else carried the weight of the household.
A house collapsing
A collapsing house means that deep down you do not feel secure about the foundation your life stands on, such as your job, your family life or your health. Cracks in the walls or rain leaking through the roof mean the problem is still small: you can see it, but nobody is fixing it.
Discovering a new room in your house
Suddenly finding a new room in a familiar house points to a talent or interest you have left unused, such as singing you gave up long ago. A bright room shows you still feel drawn to it, and a dusty one shows this side of you has been neglected for a long time.
A dirty or clean house
A house full of clutter means a lot of unfinished work hangs over your head, and a spotless, tidy house says you have more or less got things in order. Sweeping the house yourself, or freshening a mud floor with a new coat of clay the way village homes are kept, means you want to clear away old resentments or a load of extra duties.

Visiting someone's house means some part of their life, such as the peace in their home, draws you, and you are quietly comparing it with your own. If you felt like an outsider there, you have not yet found your place in a new setting, such as your in-laws' home or a new office.
Being locked out of your own house
Standing in front of a locked door means you feel like a stranger in your own family, or in your own life. This dream often comes when distance has grown between you and the people close to you, or when you have gone a long time without making time for yourself.
A thief or stranger in the house
This means someone is crossing your personal boundaries, like a relative who interferes too much or work calls on your day off. If something was stolen, notice what it was, because that tells you what you are afraid of losing.
A house on fire
Your own house catching fire pictures intense anger or a sudden change that is shaking up the life you have arranged. If someone else's house is burning, the worry is about the people who live there.
After waking, recall which part of the dream house was clearest, then think about which area of your life is in that same state right now. If the same house keeps coming back, something there is unresolved, often an old strain with someone in the family. If you have just moved, or you live abroad far from your family, the dream is often an echo of what you think about all day.
